Consett and District Photographic Society was originally formed in 1950's by a group of keen photographers and their friends. All, of course used film and printed their pictures in the darkroom as there was no such thing as digital cameras or computers and printers! Today most Club members, though not all, photograph and print digitally. Some members have compact cameras whilst others have Digital SLRs with a full range of lens, there is however a constant battle over which system is the best, Nikon or Canon, Pentax or Olympus! Even with computers members are split, some using PC's whilst others have Apples - this makes for some good discussions but really means, if anybody has a problem there is always someone to ask for an answer.

During this time the club have held their meetings in various venues around Consett, including 'The British Legion Club' and 'The Demi Club' before moving to our current venue, Citizens House in 2001. The club premises are of course Disable Discrimination Act compliant and have wheelchair access.

Membership numbers have always fluctuated but have recently increased, both because Stanley Photographic Society folded in 2004 and some members joined our club (we could even be called Derwentside Photographic Society now!), and of course the recent upsurge in Digital Photography, as everyone now owns a camera but not many know how to use it! Currently, there are approximately 30 members covering an age range from 20's to ?? well, going slightly grey.

We have a varied syllabus which is designed to support, teach and develop members' skills and also to demonstrate excellence by inviting experienced photographers, both external and our own club members, to show their work. There are a number of practical evenings on both Digital manipulation and Portrait photography and also several competitions throughout the year when members can enter to test their progress.

The Club is affiliated to the Northern Counties Photographic Federation, a group of 40 clubs in northern England. This NCPF offers opportunities for Club members to meet and compete over a wider range than they would if they met only within the context of their own club.
